The Dhaka International Trade Fair 2005 opened at
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka on Saturday, December 10, 2005. The prime
minister, Khaleda Zia, inaugurated the fair.
The month-long - 11th Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF)-2005 ended January 10, 2006 after the successful interaction between producers and buyers from home and abroad. Twelve countries, including India, Pakistan, Myanmar, China, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, Italy, USA and host Bangladesh, participated in the fair organised by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).
About 500 stalls were set up, and hundreds of buyers visited those and purchased various items according to their needs in a peaceful atmosphere at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city. Information Minister M Shamsul Islam attended the closing ceremony as the chief guest while Commerce Minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury and Commerce Advisor Barkatullah Bulu were the special guests. EPB Vice-Chairman Mir Shahabuddin Mahmud presided over the ceremony.
The ministers distributed trophies among the best stall owners and the service providers for their performance in making the fair a success.
Commerce Secretary Faruk Ahmed Siddiqui and FBCCI President Mir Nasir were present.
Calling upon the businessmen to market their products in the global markets, Shamsul Islam said the DITF has been playing an important role in projecting the local products before the world. Referring to the introduction of the DITF in 1995, he said the fair during the last 11 years has been able to draw the attention of all at home and abroad.
Despite various adversities, the GDP growth rate was 5.38 per cent in last fiscal and the government is trying to achieve 7 per cent growth as per the millenium development goals (MDGs) of the United Nations.
Altaf Chowdhury said the area of the DITF would be extended in the coming years and the producers will get opportunities to exhibit their more products. The producers should improve the quality of their products and keep the prices of those at a reasonable level to compete the world market.
